Understanding the 4Cs

The 4Cs—Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat—are the universal standards for evaluating diamond quality. Understanding them helps you choose the perfect diamond.

The 4Cs were developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) to create a universal language for diamond quality. While all four factors are important, their relative importance depends on your priorities and budget. At 6ix of Diamonds, all our diamonds are certified and graded by reputable gemological laboratories.

Cut

The most important factor in a diamond's beauty. Cut determines how well a diamond reflects light.

GradeDescription
Ideal/ExcellentRecommended
Maximum fire and brilliance. Light reflects from one facet to another and disperses through the top.
Very GoodRecommended
Properly reflects most light. Appears similar to Excellent under normal viewing.
Good
Reflects most light. An excellent value for those on a budget.
Fair
Still a quality diamond, but not as brilliant. Light escapes from sides/bottom.
Poor
Most light escapes from sides and bottom. Not recommended.

6ix of Diamonds Tip

We recommend Excellent or Very Good cut for maximum sparkle. This is where you should prioritize your budget.

Color

Diamond color refers to the absence of color. The less color, the higher the grade.

GradeDescription
D-F (Colorless)Recommended
Extremely rare and valuable. No visible color even under magnification.
G-J (Near Colorless)Recommended
Excellent value. Color difficult to detect unless compared to higher grades.
K-M (Faint)
Slight yellow tint visible. Can look beautiful in yellow gold settings.
N-R (Very Light)
Noticeable yellow or brown tint.
S-Z (Light)
Obvious color. Not typically used in fine jewelry.

6ix of Diamonds Tip

For white gold or platinum settings, we recommend G-I color. For yellow gold, you can go as low as K and the warmth will complement the metal.

Clarity

Clarity measures the presence of natural imperfections called inclusions. Most are invisible to the naked eye.

GradeDescription
FL/IF (Flawless)
No inclusions visible under 10x magnification. Extremely rare and expensive.
VVS1/VVS2 (Very Very Slight)
Inclusions difficult to see even under 10x magnification. Excellent quality.
VS1/VS2 (Very Slight)Recommended
Minor inclusions visible under 10x. Not visible to the naked eye.
SI1/SI2 (Slight)Recommended
Inclusions visible under 10x. May or may not be visible to naked eye.
I1/I2/I3 (Included)
Inclusions visible to the naked eye. May affect brilliance.

6ix of Diamonds Tip

VS2 and SI1 offer the best value. Focus on "eye-clean" diamonds where inclusions are not visible without magnification.

Carat

Carat is the unit of weight for diamonds. One carat equals 0.2 grams.

GradeDescription
0.25 - 0.50ct
Delicate and elegant. Perfect for everyday pieces and stackable rings.
0.50 - 0.99ct
Classic size range. Excellent balance of size and value.
1.00 - 1.49ctRecommended
Popular choice for engagement rings. Noticeable and impressive.
1.50 - 2.00ct
Significant presence. Makes a strong statement.
2.00ct+
Exceptional and rare. Investment-quality stones.

6ix of Diamonds Tip

Buying just under popular weights (0.90ct instead of 1.00ct) can save significantly while appearing nearly identical in size.

Diamond Shapes

Beyond the 4Cs, the shape of your diamond is a matter of personal style. Each shape has its own character and appeal.

Round Brilliant

The most popular and brilliant cut. 58 facets maximize sparkle.

Princess

Square shape with brilliant sparkle. Modern and elegant.

Cushion

Rounded corners with large facets. Romantic vintage appeal.

Oval

Elongated shape that flatters the finger. Excellent brilliance.

Emerald

Step-cut with rectangular facets. Sophisticated and unique.

Pear

Teardrop shape combining round and marquise. Distinctive elegance.

Marquise

Football-shaped with pointed ends. Maximizes carat weight appearance.
